INDEPENDENT CLARICE STARLING
OF THOMAS HARRIS'
THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS AND HANNIBAL.

“Don’t let it go to your head,” Will advised, despite the fact he could tell it most certainly was not. If anything, Clarice’s current disposition almost seemed displeased at the idea of being anyone’s favorite. Not that he could blame her. It was no secret that the higher-ups tended to whisper (and quite nastily) about Starling. They undoubtedly felt threatened by her intelligence and ways of operation.

Closing his case file, Will looked at Starling and set the documents onto the table. “He’s a psychiatrist – unfortunately, in the way things tend to go, a therapist’s mind never truly shuts down. They’re always over-analyzing, over-working, and oftentimes over-stepping in social situations. I wouldn’t take it to heart.”

Admittedly, Will’s assessment was a far different tune than the one he was singing mere months ago. As a rule of thumb, he hated therapy, but somehow, amidst the decay of his mind, it had been welcome to speak to someone. Or at least, someone who seemed to understand where his terrors took root.

“I suppose he’s intimidating,” Will finally allowed, “but I was scornful of him during our first meeting. It’s difficult for me to fear what I scorn. Perhaps next time you speak, you should look to him with a different lens. He undoubtedly finds you fascinating, but that doesn’t mean you need to return the favor.”

Hell if I’m returning the favor, and I don’t need your counsel, Starling thinks.

“ I’ll do that,” she says. Gotta keep the prize in mind: find the killer

She drops her head and scrunches her lips in thought, staring at photos of victims as though they are covered in string impossible to unravel. Her forensics background allows her to view the images without an external reaction, but the tug in her chest fuels a fire within her to end the slaughter as soon as she can. Crawford would tell her to leave out any personal ties—it’d only do bad—but she doesn’t have to reveal her thoughts to anyone, least of all that creepo son of a bitch in charge.

Before she allows her mind to swallow itself in emotion, Starling grounds herself for a few moments and stops to think about what Will said before telling her to look at Dr. Lecter differently. In this case, she looks at Will differently.

“ What made you scorn him?”
