        An unsatisfied twist of the lips ensues. Daddy, mother, Hannah, and plenty of others pushed the envelope as far as Starling’s tolerance for bitterness goes. ( Not their actions so much as the events that influenced their lives. )

       She’s not sure what makes bitterness worthy of attainment. Besides, she has enough of it, and it’s hard to swallow. She wonders what sort of experiences engendered the same bitterness that fills Dr. Lecter’s chest, too.
